God opened this door to help someone that was in great need.  Thank you Jesus!

Why Serve?

Often times I get asked, even by the guys on the street, why do come down here and serve the Homeless each week. Honestly, sometimes I ask myself the same question.  Then I recall all of the lives we have touched by being there.  These special touches more than make up for the hard time and ungrateful attitudes we encounter from time to time. Do you serve, and if so why? I would like to hear.

Cell Phones?

Recently a young lady that is a faithful servant with us at Church On The Street was not there one night, she shared on Facebook that one of her homeless friends texted her to see if she was OK.  The comments she received where very telling of the perception people have of the homeless. Why does a homeless guy need a cell phone?  Why not use that money for a place to stay and so forth.  One time Ken Baker a homeless friend sent me an email of his new Blackberry, I am like what are you doing with a Blackberry???

From my experience over the last 10 years or so is that these guys don’t live in the social “vacuum” that you might expect.   Many are in constant contact with their families, the very families that have for the most part turned their backs on them.  It is my belief that most people are homeless because they have destroyed relationships with their family.  you can only lie, steel and cheat your family so much before they have had enough.  I would like to believe that they have a phone to gain employment.  Most homeless guys would like to have a job, now can they keep it after they get it is another story.  But it is almost impossible to get a job with out the ability to have a prospective employer call you.

What do you think?
